In Search Of True Wellness
We live in a constant state of over-stimulation - billboards advertise, televisions speak, cell phones ring, text and email us – all tapping into our senses to tell us what we need and when we need it. From food choices to recreation to fitness, our lives are becoming more and more controlled by the swirling vortex of media that constantly surrounds us. Our perceptions are fed to us – we conform and buy into the media's messages. This pill will burn excess fat, this gadget will make your chores easier, eat this, buy that - an endless stream of things to help you live a more comfortable life. But are we really better off with these things? And how does this all relate to wellness any way?
As a result of this over-stimulation, our society's view of what's really important has becoming skewed. Before fitness centers and fad diets, wellness used to be a simple thing. Meals were prepared at home from wholesome ingredients, kids played outside, and the world woke as the sun rose and quieted as the sun set. Now we eat as we're driving, kids are glued to the television playing video games, we're constantly plugged into our tech devices and the world never seems to sleep. We feel sluggish, over worked, hyped up and strung out. We are led to believe that for every pain, illness or imperfection we have, there is some thing that can fix it. All too often though the symptoms are only masked by the so-called solutions. True wellness is holistic – pertaining to the whole body, mind, and spirit.
In order to get away from the quick-fix lifestyle and embrace true wellness, we must first assume responsibility for the quality of our lives. Here are a few guidelines to help you get started:
- Eat simple foods that you mindfully prepare at home.
- Exercise daily without creating pain or injury.
- Get 7 – 9 hours of sleep each night.
- Spend time each day sitting quietly with your eyes closed.
- Let go of anger.
- Live in the present moment – don't dwell on the past or worry about the future.
Remember, wellness is an active process. It is health in the deepest and broadest sense - a balance of mind, body and spirit. As you create balance in your daily life fatigue, cravings, and even illness begin to fall away. True wellness is a way to live that is oriented toward maximizing your optimal potential. Seem daunting? Perhaps at first, but as the saying goes, the first step is the hardest.
